Use of a simple handmade retractor to protect the descending palatine artery during removal of posterior osseous interferences for maxillary impaction in Le Fort I osteotomy.

For accurate superior or posterior repositioning of the maxilla in Le Fort I osteotomy, bone removal around the descending palatine artery (DPA) and maxillary tuberosity is required. Because the most common site of hemorrhage in the Le Fort I osteotomy is the posterior maxilla, this bone removal provides surgeons to surgical frustration of DPA injury. When the DPA is injured during the bone rem...

Surgical correction of septal deviation after Le Fort I osteotomy

BACKGROUND The Le Fort I osteotomy is one of the most widely used and useful procedure to correct the dentofacial deformities of the midface. The changes of the maxilla position affect to overlying soft tissue including the nasal structure. Postoperative nasal septum deviation is a rare and unpredicted outcome after the surgery. There are only a few reports reporting the management of this comp...

Dimensions of Velopharyngeal Space following Maxillary Advancement with Le Fort I Osteotomy Compared to Zisser Segmental Osteotomy: A Cephalometric Study

The objectives of this study are to assess the velopharyngeal dimensions using cephalometric variables of the nasopharynx and oropharynx as well as to compare the Le Fort I osteotomy technique to Zisser's anterior maxillary osteotomy technique based on patients' outcomes within early and late postoperative follow-ups. 15 patients with severe maxillary deficiency treated with Le Fort I osteotomy...

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis of Stress Distribution and Displacement of the Maxilla Following Surgically Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion with Tooth- and Bone-Borne Devices

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the displacement and stress distribution during surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion under different surgical conditions with tooth- and bone-borne devices. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of a maxilla was constructed and an expansion force of 100 N was applied to the left and right molars and premo...
